Shout for joy and get to work!

Lost Creek, in the McKenzie River watershed, isn’t lost at all—it’s on a mission to join the magnificent McKenzie on its ultimate journey to the Pacific Ocean (2024)

It’s Easter week! So I’m thinking about … liminal spaces. You know, those spaces between here and there, consequential thresholds, invitations into the unknown, where attitudes, discernments, and choices matter greatly.

“Tell the brothers to come out of hiding and meet me in Galilee,” the risen Christ says to the women who find the sealed tomb empty at dawn.

The women have never lived this moment before. Nor have the brothers ever felt so on their own.

And because Pope Francis never was “just for Catholics,” church worldwide now enters into the consequential work of discerning how we will show up, and be real human beings in service to a suffering, traumatized, and precious world.

Our nation, too, is at a liminal space, and therefore so are our communities, especially their most fragile, vulnerable members.

The One who slipped through locked doors slips now into war rooms, executive suites, conclaves, and personal spaces of exhaustion, fear, and consequential choices—all liminal spaces between Death and Life.

Liminal spaces are both scary and deeply consequential.

“Be not afraid!” the Risen One reminds the women. “Be not afraid!” he reminds the men. As though saying: Be filled with courage! Don’t even think of going to that place of fear!

The courageous fiery Spirit of the risen Christ is WITH us … I dare say IN us, AMONG us, FOR us, and for this world which God still so loves.

Our work is to make the revolution of justice, generosity, and joy irresistible to others.

Therefore, we shout for joy and get to work!
