Be ignited, and go public with your fire!
Approx. read time: 1:30 min.
I’m thinking of a quote of 20th century writer, paleontologist, mystic, and Jesuit priest Pierre Teilhard de Chardin: “Christ, his heart a fire: capable of penetrating everywhere and, gradually, spreading everywhere.”
With Pentecost, the Christian community celebrates, once again, the great coming of the Holy Spirit, as Jesus promised.
“Celebrate” is a tricky word here, as with other sacred celebrations, which quickly become commercialized, trivialized, politicized, drained of power and beauty, then safely stored away until next year.
This “fire” of which Teilhard writes is the fire of Holy Spirit, leaving no part of the Earth, nor any human heart, untouched by the power that flows from Jesus’ Resurrection.
Fire happens when you live a life radically given to Peace, to creative, Love-driven nonviolent resistance to every dark force that would erase the dignity of every form of Life.
Dark forces indeed are at work. So this is no time to merely “celebrate” a past event, but to risk being ignited now, in the cause of Truth, and Peace, in the Spirit of Justice, Generosity, and Joy.
So, I’m launching my initiative called “Be Ignited, And Go Public With Your Fire!”
Why? Well, the world is a mess, human suffering abounds, and this is no time for anyone of conscience, human decency, or good will to retreat. Celebrate, yes. Shout for joy that the Spirit of the Universal Christ penetrates everywhere, even into the most needful places: the Love-abandoned spaces, the blood-soaked killing fields, the gilded halls of power, the darkened caverns of the human heart.
Be ignited, I say, and go public with your fire!
